Key Takeaways
- A men's medium US t-shirt measures 38-40" chest and 28-29" body length. A women's medium measures 35-37" chest and 26-27" body length.
- Sizing varies by brand: a Bella+Canvas 3001 medium is roughly 2" slimmer in the chest than a Gildan 5000 medium at the same size label.
- Three measurements determine fit: chest (most important), body length, and sleeve length. Chest accounts for ~80% of whether a shirt fits.
- The most accurate method is measuring a t-shirt you already own and like, not your body. Size charts show the garment laid flat (half the chest width).
- Unisex sizing runs 3-4" wider in the chest than women's sizing at the same label. Women ordering unisex should generally size down one step.
- For bulk orders, the standard US adult distribution curve is 10% S / 25% M / 35% L / 20% XL / 10% 2XL, covering 80% of groups accurately.
- Shrinkage of 3-5% is typical for 100% cotton; pre-shrunk cotton and cotton/poly blends shrink only 1-2%.
Quick Answer: T-Shirt Size Chart
A men's medium t-shirt typically measures 38-40 inches in the chest and 28-29 inches in body length. A women's medium measures 35-37 inches in the chest and 26-27 inches in length. However, sizing varies significantly between brands - a Bella+Canvas 3001 medium fits slimmer than a Gildan 5000 medium. This guide provides exact measurements for every major blank brand, plus step-by-step instructions for measuring yourself to find your perfect fit. Use our interactive T-Shirt Size Chart Tool to compare sizes across brands instantly.
Getting the right t-shirt size should not be a guessing game. Whether you are ordering custom apparel for your team, buying merch for your brand, or simply trying to find a shirt that actually fits, the challenge is the same: sizes are not universal. A medium from one brand can fit like a large from another, and generic S/M/L labels tell you almost nothing about actual garment dimensions.
This guide eliminates the guesswork. I have compiled exact measurements for the seven most popular blank t-shirt brands used in custom apparel, along with step-by-step measurement instructions, fit type explanations, and guidance for ordering sizes for groups. How to Measure Yourself for a T-Shirt
Body Measurement Guide
Step-through guide that walks you through every measurement with visual references.
How do you measure yourself for a t-shirt?
To measure yourself for a t-shirt, you need three measurements taken with a flexible measuring tape: chest, body length, and sleeve length. Chest is the most important, it determines roughly 80% of whether a shirt fits correctly.
Stand naturally with arms at your sides. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest (nipple level), keeping it level all the way around. The tape should be snug but able to fit one finger between it and your body. Record the number in inches at the end of a natural exhale.
One important translation: size charts list the garment laid flat, which shows half the chest width. If your chest measures 40", look for a 20-21" flat chest width for standard fit, or 22-23" for relaxed fit. Divide your body measurement by two to compare against any brand's chart.
Before looking at any size chart, you need three key measurements. You can measure yourself or, for better accuracy, have someone help you. All you need is a flexible measuring tape. Use our Body Measurement Guide tool for an interactive walkthrough.
Measurement 1: Chest (Most Important)
The chest measurement is the single most important number for finding your t-shirt size.
- Stand naturally with your arms relaxed at your sides.
- Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, typically right at nipple level.
- Keep the tape level all the way around - not angled up or down at the back.
- The tape should be snug but not compressing your chest. You should be able to fit one finger between the tape and your body.
- Breathe normally and take the measurement at the end of a natural exhale.
- Record the number in inches.
Pro tip: Compare your chest measurement to the "chest width" on size charts by dividing by 2. Size charts typically show the garment laid flat (one side only). If your chest measures 40 inches, look for a garment with a 20-21 inch chest width for a standard fit, or 22-23 inches for a relaxed fit.
Measurement 2: Body Length
- Find the point where your shoulder meets your neck - the seam of a well-fitting shirt sits here.
- Measure straight down from this point to where you want the shirt to end. For most people, this is mid-hip.
- Alternatively, measure a t-shirt you already own that fits well: lay it flat and measure from the highest point of the shoulder (where it meets the collar) straight down to the bottom hem.
Measurement 3: Sleeve Length
- For a standard crew neck tee, the sleeve is measured from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve hem.
- Most t-shirt sleeves fall between 7.5 and 9.5 inches, covering roughly half the upper arm.
- This measurement matters most for fitted styles where a too-short sleeve can look awkward on larger arms.
How to Measure a T-Shirt
Measure across the chest, 1 inch below the armhole seam, from edge to edge. Double this for full chest measurement.
Measure from the highest point of the shoulder (where the seam meets the collar) straight down to the hem.
Measure from the shoulder seam down to the end of the sleeve hem. Standard is 8-9 inches for adults.
Tip: Lay the garment flat on a hard surface and smooth out wrinkles before measuring.
The Best Method: Measure a Shirt You Already Own
If you own a t-shirt that fits you well, the most reliable sizing method is measuring that garment flat and comparing those measurements to the brand's size chart. Lay the shirt on a flat surface, smooth out wrinkles, and measure: chest width (armpit to armpit), body length (highest shoulder point to bottom hem), and sleeve length (shoulder seam to sleeve hem). These flat garment measurements correspond directly to what size charts show.

Men's vs Women's vs Unisex Fit Differences
Men’s / Unisex
Straight cut, wider chest and shoulders, designed for a flat torso. Medium = 20″ chest, 29″ body.
Women’s
Narrower waist, shorter body length, smaller armhole. Medium = 17.5″ chest, 26″ body.
Cross-sizing rule
Woman ordering unisex? Size down one. Most men don’t fit women’s cuts due to the narrower torso.
What is the difference between men's, women's, and unisex t-shirt sizing?
Men's t-shirt sizing runs straight up and down with a wider chest and shoulders, designed for a flat torso. Women's sizing is cut narrower at the waist with a shorter body length and smaller armhole. Unisex sizing follows men's proportions but is labelled without gender.
At a medium label, the three differ by ~3-4" at the chest:
| Fit type | Chest width (medium, flat) | Body length (medium) |
|---|---|---|
| Men's standard | 20" | 29" |
| Unisex | 20" | 28.5" |
| Women's | 17.5" | 26" |
The practical rule: a woman ordering unisex should usually size down one step (e.g. unisex small instead of medium) unless she wants a relaxed fit. A man ordering women's should size up two steps, but most men's bodies won't fit women's cuts at any size due to the narrower torso.
Understanding the structural differences between these cuts prevents sizing disasters, especially when ordering for mixed groups.
Men's / Unisex Cut
- Straight body from chest to hem (no waist shaping)
- Wider shoulders
- Longer body length
- Longer, wider sleeves
- Higher neckline
Important: "Unisex" in the custom apparel industry means men's cut. It is not a gender-neutral middle ground. Women ordering unisex tees should typically size down one full size from their women's size for a comparable fit.
Women's Cut
- Tapered waist (narrower at the midsection, wider at chest and hip)
- Narrower shoulders
- Shorter body length (1-2 inches shorter than equivalent men's size)
- Shorter, capped sleeves
- Wider, lower neckline (often scooped or v-neck)
Cross-Sizing Reference
| Women's Size | Equivalent Unisex Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Women's XS | No equivalent | Unisex XS will still be too large for most |
| Women's S | Unisex XS | Will fit looser through the waist |
| Women's M | Unisex S | Most common crossover - decent fit |
| Women's L | Unisex S - M | S for fitted, M for relaxed |
| Women's XL | Unisex M | Good crossover for relaxed fit |
| Women's 2XL | Unisex L | Will be longer in body and sleeves |
Men's vs Women's vs Unisex T-Shirt Fit Comparison
| Feature | Men's Regular | Women's Fitted | Unisex |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoulder Width | Wider cut | Narrower | Medium |
| Body Shape | Straight/boxy | Tapered waist | Slightly tapered |
| Sleeve Length | 8.5-9.5 in | 6-7.5 in | 7.5-8.5 in |
| Body Length (M) | 28-29 in | 25-26 in | 27-28 in |
| Best For | Classic relaxed look | Contoured feminine fit | Mixed groups, events |
Measurements shown are typical for size Medium. Actual dimensions vary by brand.
Relaxed vs Fitted vs Oversized: Understanding Fit Types
What is the difference between relaxed, fitted, and oversized t-shirts?
Fit type determines how much excess fabric sits between your body and the shirt. A fitted cut follows body contours with 1-2" of ease; common in women's cuts and Bella+Canvas 3001. A standard/relaxed cut has 3-4" of ease through the chest and is the most common men's and unisex cut (Gildan 5000, Next Level 3600). An oversized cut adds 4-6"+ of chest ease, 2-3" of extra body length, and a dropped shoulder seam, typical of streetwear and Comfort Colors 1717 when sized up.
| Fit type | Chest ease | Body ease | Sleeve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitted | 1-2" | Tight at waist | Shorter |
| Standard/Relaxed | 3-4" | Straight cut | Mid-length |
| Oversized | 4-6"+ | Longer, boxy | Dropped shoulder |
Pro tip: to get an oversized look from a standard-fit blank, size up one or two sizes. This is cheaper than sourcing a true oversized blank and preserves print quality on Bella+Canvas, Gildan, and Next Level stock.
Beyond size labels, the fit type of a garment dramatically changes how it wears. Two shirts in the same size can look completely different depending on their cut.
| Fit Type | Characteristics | Best Blanks | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slim / Fitted | Follows body contours, minimal excess fabric, shorter sleeves, side-seamed | Bella+Canvas 3001, Next Level 3600 | Fashion-forward brands, younger demographics, retail-style merch |
| Classic / Regular | Straight body, moderate chest room, standard sleeve length | Gildan 5000, Hanes 5250, Champion T425 | Corporate events, group orders, broad audience appeal |
| Relaxed / Oversized | Extra room through chest and body, dropped shoulders, longer body | Comfort Colors 1717, or size up in any blank | Streetwear, lifestyle brands, trendy oversized aesthetic |
How much extra room defines each fit:
- Fitted: 2-3 inches of ease beyond your chest measurement (e.g., 40" chest, 42-43" garment chest)
- Classic: 4-5 inches of ease (e.g., 40" chest, 44-45" garment chest)
- Relaxed/Oversized: 6+ inches of ease (e.g., 40" chest, 46"+ garment chest)
Youth T-Shirt Sizing Guide
What size t-shirt does a youth wear?
Youth t-shirt sizing is organised by age, not numeric size: YXS (4-5), YS (6-8), YM (10-12), YL (14-16), YXL (18-20). Chest measurements range from ~13" flat (YXS) to ~21" flat (YXL), the top end is roughly equivalent to an adult men's small.
Brand variation affects youth sizing more than adult: Gildan 5000B youth tees run ~1" larger in the chest than Bella+Canvas 3001Y at the same age label. For children between two sizes, always order the larger size, kids grow quickly and 100% cotton shrinks another 2-3% after first wash.
Youth sizing is the standard for school uniforms, sports teams, summer camps, and family photo sessions. Most US decorators stock YS, YM, and YL with limited inventory in YXS and YXL, check availability before committing to a mixed-size group order.
Youth sizing is essential for family events, school orders, sports teams, and creator merch targeting younger audiences. Youth sizes use age-based labels but vary by brand just like adult sizes.
| Youth Size | Age Range | Chest Width (in) | Body Length (in) | Weight (lbs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YXS | 2-4 | 13" | 18" | 25-35 |
| YS | 4-6 | 14.5" | 20" | 35-50 |
| YM | 6-8 | 16" | 22" | 50-70 |
| YL | 8-12 | 17" | 24" | 70-95 |
| YXL | 12-14 | 18" | 26" | 95-120 |
Transition note: A youth XL is approximately equivalent to an adult XS in chest width. For teens aged 14-16, an adult small or extra small typically works better than scaling up in youth sizes. When in doubt, measure the child's chest and compare to the garment measurements directly.
Tall Sizing Guide

What is tall sizing for t-shirts?
Tall sizing (LT, XLT, 2XLT, 3XLT) adds 2" of body length at every size while keeping chest width the same. It is designed for men over 6'2" whose standard t-shirts ride up above the waistband. An LT (Large Tall) has the same ~22" chest width as a standard L but measures 32" in body length instead of 30".
Tall cuts are available in Gildan 2400 Ultra Cotton and Hanes Beefy-T 5180 but not in most mid-weight brands like Bella+Canvas 3001 or Next Level 3600. For custom orders outside these brands, printing on a standard XL instead of L often provides similar extra length at the cost of 1" extra chest width.
Women's petite and tall cuts exist in limited brands; check stock availability before committing to a group order in those specific cuts.
Tall sizes add 2-3 inches of body length without increasing the chest width. This is critical for people who are tall but not necessarily broader - sizing up a standard shirt gives more chest room but often still does not provide enough length.
| Standard Size | Standard Length | Tall Length | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| M | 29" | 31 - 32" | +2 - 3" |
| L | 30" | 32 - 33" | +2 - 3" |
| XL | 31" | 33 - 34" | +2 - 3" |
| 2XL | 32" | 34 - 35" | +2 - 3" |
Tall sizing is generally recommended for individuals 6'2" and above. Not all brands offer tall options in their standard blanks. If tall sizing is important for your order, discuss options when requesting your custom quote from Arklavo.
How to Order for Groups: Size Distribution Curves
Size Run Calculator
Enter your quantity, pick your brand, and get a brand-specific size distribution instantly.
What is the standard size distribution for a bulk t-shirt order?
When individual sizes cannot be collected from everyone on a team, use the standard US adult distribution curve: 10% Small, 25% Medium, 35% Large, 20% XL, 10% 2XL. This covers 80% of bulk order groups accurately and tracks the typical US adult body distribution.
For a 100-shirt order this means 10 S, 25 M, 35 L, 20 XL, and 10 2XL. For women-only groups the curve shifts smaller (15% XS, 30% S, 30% M, 15% L, 10% XL). For construction, warehouse, or athletic teams, shift larger by adding 5% to L and XL and reducing S.
Always collect individual sizes when possible. A short online form for each recipient reduces reorder rates by ~40% and eliminates the most common post-delivery complaint on bulk team uniform orders. Our Size Run Calculator generates brand-specific distributions automatically.
When ordering for a team, event, or merch launch, getting the size distribution right is critical. Order too many smalls and you will be stuck with inventory. Over-order XXLs and the same problem. Use our Size Run Calculator for precise calculations.
Standard Size Distribution (When You Cannot Collect Individual Sizes)
| Size | General Mixed Group | Primarily Male Group | Primarily Female Group | For 48 Shirts |

Best Practice: Always Collect Individual Sizes
The distribution curves above are educated estimates. The far better approach is collecting actual sizes from your group before ordering. Use a simple Google Form with the following fields:
- Name
- T-shirt size (with the brand-specific size chart linked)
- Preferred fit (fitted vs relaxed)
- Any notes (between sizes, prefer to size up, etc.)
Order 5-10% extra in M and L - these are the most commonly exchanged sizes and having spares prevents fulfillment delays. Read our YouTube Merch Complete Guide for more on ordering strategy.
Common Sizing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Custom Fit Recommendation Quiz
Five questions, personalised brand + size + fit type recommendation in under a minute.
A $15 sample order before a 500-piece run prevents more resize complaints than any other single practice in bulk custom apparel.
What are the most common t-shirt sizing mistakes?
Five mistakes cause roughly 80% of sizing complaints on bulk t-shirt orders:
- Assuming all brands size the same, a Bella+Canvas 3001 medium is 2" slimmer than a Gildan 5000 medium. Always check the specific brand's chart.
- Ordering unisex sizes for women without adjustment, unisex runs 3-4" wider at the chest. Women should generally size down one step.
- Not accounting for shrinkage, 100% cotton shrinks 3-5% on first wash. Order the larger size if you are between two.
- Using body measurements instead of garment measurements, size charts show the garment laid flat (half the chest), not the body. Divide your chest measurement by 2 to compare.
- Not ordering sample sizes, a $15 sample before a 500-piece run prevents most resize reorders.
After years in custom apparel, these are the sizing errors I see most frequently. Every one of them is preventable.
Mistake 1: Assuming All Brands Size the Same
A medium is not a medium is not a medium. As we showed in the comparison table above, a Comfort Colors medium has the chest width of a Bella+Canvas large. Always check the specific brand's size chart, not a generic one.
Mistake 2: Ordering Unisex Sizes for Women Without Adjustment
Unisex means men's cut. Women who order their usual women's size in a unisex shirt will receive something baggy in the shoulders and long in the body. Advise women to size down one full size in unisex, or better yet, offer women's cut options.
Mistake 3: Not Accounting for Shrinkage
100% cotton garments shrink. Some are pre-shrunk, but most will still lose 3-5% in length after the first hot wash. If a fit is already borderline, that shrinkage makes it unwearable. See the shrinkage section for specific numbers.
Mistake 4: Using Body Measurements Instead of Garment Measurements
Size charts show garment dimensions, not body dimensions. A garment with a 20-inch chest width accommodates a 38-41 inch chest - not a 20-inch chest. Always compare like-for-like: garment measurements to garment measurements, or body measurements to the "fits chest" column.
Mistake 5: Not Ordering Sample Sizes
For any order of 48+ units, request samples first. A single sample in your most common size costs a few dollars but can save you from a costly size-wide error. At Arklavo, we recommend samples for all first-time orders in a new blank.
Size Charts for Hoodies, Polos, and Jackets
How do sizes for hoodies, polos, and jackets differ from t-shirts?
Outerwear and branded tops use the same S-5XL labels as t-shirts but have different cuts: hoodies run 2-4" wider in the chest than a standard t-shirt of the same size to fit over base layers. Polos typically run 1" narrower than t-shirts with a slightly shorter body length and a more fitted cut through the waist. Jackets run 3-6" wider to accommodate mid-weight layers underneath.
| Garment (size M) | Chest width (flat) |
|---|---|
| Men's t-shirt | 20" |
| Men's polo | 19" |
| Men's hoodie | 22-23" |
| Men's jacket | 23-25" |
When ordering a full uniform set (polo + jacket) for one person, check each item's individual chart rather than assuming the same label fits identically across garments.
While this guide focuses on t-shirts, here are quick reference charts for other common custom apparel items. For detailed guides, see our Hoodie Size Guide and Polo Size Chart tools.
Hoodies: General Size Reference
| Size | Chest Width (in) | Body Length (in) | Sleeve Length (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 20 - 21" | 26 - 27" | 33 - 34" |
| M | 22 - 23" | 27 - 28" | 34 - 35" |
| L | 24 - 25" | 28 - 29" | 35 - 36" |
| XL | 26 - 27" | 29 - 30" | 36 - 37" |
| 2XL | 28 - 29" | 30 - 31" | 37 - 38" |
Note: Hoodie sleeve length is measured from the center back neck to the cuff (unlike t-shirts which measure from shoulder seam). Most people wear the same size in hoodies as t-shirts, but if you want a slimmer look, consider sizing down. For the oversized streetwear look, size up one.
Polos: General Size Reference
| Size | Chest Width (in) | Body Length (in) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 19 - 20" | 28" |
| M | 21 - 22" | 29" |
| L | 23 - 24" | 30" |
| XL | 25 - 26" | 31" |
| 2XL | 27 - 28" | 32" |
Polos generally run slightly smaller than t-shirts from the same brand because they are designed for a more tailored look. If your team wears a relaxed-fit t-shirt, they may want to size up in polos. For hat sizing, use our Hat Size Calculator.
Jackets: General Size Reference
Jacket sizing typically runs true to standard sizing but adds 1-2 inches of chest width compared to t-shirts to accommodate layering. If you plan to wear a hoodie under a jacket, size up one. Most custom jacket orders align with the wearer's standard t-shirt size for a comfortable fit over a base layer.

Take the Fit QuizHow Shrinkage Affects Sizing
How much does a custom t-shirt shrink after washing?
Cotton t-shirt shrinkage depends on fabric composition and wash method:
- 100% cotton, un-treated: 3-5% shrinkage, most of it on first wash
- Pre-shrunk 100% cotton (labelled "pre-shrunk" or "sanforised"): 1-2%
- Cotton/polyester blend (50/50 or similar): 1-2%
- 100% polyester or tri-blend: under 1%
Practical translation: a 22" flat chest 100% cotton shirt shrinks to approximately 21" flat chest after three hot washes and dryer cycles. If you are between two sizes, order the larger size for 100% cotton and either size for pre-shrunk or blend fabrics.
The exception is oversized streetwear fits, order your true size in 100% cotton and let the natural shrinkage create a slightly more fitted look after 3-5 washes.
Shrinkage is the hidden sizing variable that catches many first-time custom apparel buyers off guard. How much a shirt shrinks depends on the fabric content, construction, and whether it has been pre-shrunk.
Shrinkage by Fabric Type
| Fabric | Expected Shrinkage | Length Lost (on Medium) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100% Cotton (not pre-shrunk) | 5 - 8% | 1.5 - 2.3" | Size up if borderline |
| 100% Cotton (pre-shrunk) | 2 - 3% | 0.5 - 0.9" | Minimal but still present |
| Cotton/Polyester Blend (50/50) | 1 - 3% | 0.3 - 0.9" | Polyester resists shrinkage |
| Cotton/Poly/Rayon Blend | 2 - 4% | 0.6 - 1.2" | Rayon is prone to shrinkage |
| 100% Polyester | 0 - 1% | 0 - 0.3" | Virtually no shrinkage |
Shrinkage by Brand
| Brand / Style | Pre-shrunk? | Shrinkage Risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bella+Canvas 3001 | Yes | Low | Still size up if between sizes due to slim cut |
| Gildan 5000 | Yes | Medium | Can lose up to 1" in length after first hot wash |
| Gildan 64000 | Yes | Low-Medium | Softstyle holds shape well |
| Next Level 3600 | Yes | Low | Poly blend resists shrinkage well |
| Comfort Colors 1717 | Garment-dyed | Medium | Garment dyeing process is a form of pre-shrinking, but still shrinks |
| Champion T425 | Yes | Low-Medium | Heavy cotton, follow cold wash guidelines |
| Hanes 5250 | Yes | Medium | Similar to Gildan 5000 in shrinkage behavior |
Key takeaway: Shrinkage primarily affects length, not width. A shirt that fits perfectly in the chest may become too short after repeated hot washes. When in doubt, size up and use cold water washing.
Care Instructions to Maintain Fit
How should I wash a custom t-shirt to keep its size and fit?
To minimise shrinkage and distortion on custom-printed t-shirts, follow four rules:
- Wash cold (30°C / 85°F or below), inside out, with similar colours
- Air-dry or tumble dry on low, heat is the primary cause of fabric shrinkage
- Avoid bleach and fabric softener, both degrade print adhesion and fabric fibres
- Iron on the reverse side at a temperature appropriate for the fabric (cotton: medium; polyester: low)
Print-specific rules: DTG and screen prints last 40-60 washes with proper care. Embroidery is washable at any temperature but the backing can warp above 60°C. DTF transfers last 30+ washes if dried on low heat.
Following these rules extends the visible life of custom apparel by an average of 2-3x compared with default wash settings.
Proper care is not just about protecting the print - it is about maintaining the garment's size and shape. Include these instructions with every custom apparel order:
Washing
- Wash cold (30C / 86F or below). Cold water prevents shrinkage and protects prints.
- Turn inside out before washing. This protects the printed or embroidered surface from friction.
- Use mild detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals that can degrade both fabric and decoration.
- Wash with similar colors. Especially important for garment-dyed shirts like Comfort Colors which can bleed.
- Avoid overloading the machine. Crowded loads create more friction and wear on both fabric and prints.
Drying
- Tumble dry low or hang dry. High heat is the primary cause of shrinkage and print cracking.
- Remove promptly from the dryer. Sitting in a hot dryer after the cycle ends causes unnecessary shrinkage.
- Never iron directly over a print. If ironing is needed, turn the shirt inside out and iron around the decoration.
Care by Decoration Method
| Method | Special Care Notes |
|---|---|
| Screen Print | Most durable. Wait 24 hours after purchase before first wash. Will last 50+ washes with proper care. |
| DTG | Wait 24 hours before first wash. Always wash inside out. Avoid fabric softener which can coat the ink. |
| DTF | Do not wash for 24 hours. Wash inside out on cold. Very durable once cured - typically lasts 50+ washes. |
| Embroidery | Most durable method - virtually indestructible. No special care needed beyond standard fabric care. |
