Why fabric weight decides how long your logo lasts

A heavier face fabric is a better foundation for decoration. Here is the mechanical reason.

Embroidery machine stitching a logo onto a custom pullover hoodie

A dense face holds the stitch

Thread needs something to bite into. On a thin fleece the needle perforates a loose knit and the design drifts as the fabric moves. A dense heavy fleece anchors every stitch, so the edges stay sharp and small lettering stays readable.

Less stretch means less distortion

Fleece moves under the needle and under the press. Heavier fabric moves less, which is why a mark applied to a heavy hoodie tends to stay square instead of pulling oval after a few wash cycles. We still back the panel to keep it honest.

Finished custom embroidered hoodies folded and ready to ship

The garment outlives the season

Decoration only lasts as long as the hoodie under it. A heavy fleece takes more wash cycles before it thins or pills, so the branded piece is still in rotation in February rather than retired.

Brand by brand: what each fleece actually weighs

Every heavy fleece Arklavo decorates, lined up by published weight. Two of these builds sit in this collection. The 12 oz Champion is the heaviest we run and it lives in the wider hoodie range.

Figures are taken from each product's own spec sheet on arklavo.com, checked July 28, 2026. Where a mill does not publish an ounce figure we leave it out rather than estimate one. Champion 12 oz pullovers are not in this grid today. You will find them in the <a href="/collections/custom-hoodies">wider custom hoodies range</a>.

What crews say about the heavy fleece
We had been buying thin hoodies that pilled by December. These zips are still in rotation and the stitching has not moved.

Site lead, landscaping crew
Ordered one pullover first just to feel the weight. It was heavier than what we had been getting, so we ran thirty for the whole shop.
Renata V.
Owner, auto repair shop
The embroidery sits on top of the fleece instead of sinking into it. That was the difference we were looking for.

Weight is the spec buyers ask about most and the one hardest to find

When a crew reorders, the reason is almost never color. It is that the last hoodie went thin. Fabric weight is the number that predicts whether a branded piece survives a second winter, and it is the number most listings leave off. The Gildan heavy blend here is 8.0 oz/yd², or 271 g/m², printed on its own spec sheet. Where a mill publishes no figure we say so instead of inventing one. Ask any supplier for the ounce weight before you order. The ones who know it will tell you.

What counts as heavyweight: oz and GSM on a real label

Custom heavyweight hoodies are sold on a word nobody regulates. Heavyweight is a marketing label, not a standard, so the only honest way to compare two hoodies is to read the fabric weight. Here is how that number works, and what it looks like across the fleece on this page.

Reading the number: oz/yd² and GSM

Fabric weight is quoted two ways. In the US it is ounces per square yard, written oz/yd². Almost everywhere else it is grams per square meter, or GSM. They measure the same thing, so they convert directly: 8.0 oz/yd² is 271 g/m². As a working guide, light hoodies sit under 8 oz, the heavy blend range runs roughly 8 to 9 oz, and 12 oz is about the top of what stays practical for a branded hoodie. Anything sold as heavyweight with no number attached is a claim rather than a spec.

What the fleece in this collection actually weighs

The Gildan heavy blend zips publish 8.0 oz/yd², which is 271 g/m², in a 50% cotton and 50% polyester fleece with air-jet yarn to reduce pilling. The Jerzees pullovers are an 80% cotton and 20% polyester fleece specified as heavyweight, with a double-lined hood and spandex-blended ribbed cuffs, but the mill publishes no ounce figure for them. We would rather tell you that than print a number we cannot stand behind.

When heavier is not the right answer

Heavier is not automatically better. A 12 oz fleece is excellent for outdoor crews in real cold and it carries embroidery beautifully, but it is warm for indoor work and it costs more per head. If your team works inside, or the hoodie is an event piece for milder months, an 8 oz heavy blend does the job for less. Match the weight to the working conditions first, then choose between stitch and print.

Heavy fleece suits trades and site crews, landscapers, breweries and taprooms, warehouse teams, and anyone whose staff are outdoors past October. Order one to feel the weight, then run the size sheet for the crew. Need something lighter for indoor staff? Start from the wider custom hoodies range, or compare cuts in our guide to hoodie styles.

Heavyweight hoodie sizing and fit

Size ranges differ by build here, so check the range before you plan a team run. Heavy fleece also wears differently than a thin hoodie: it holds structure instead of draping.

XS to 5XL on the zips, Small to 2XL on the pullovers

The Gildan heavy blend zips cover XS to 5XL, so a mixed crew fits inside one order. The Jerzees pullovers run Small to 2XL. If part of your team needs above 2XL, put those people on the zip and keep the pullover for the rest, or run the whole crew on the zip. We sort a full size run on a single order either way. Our <a href="/blogs/custom-apparel-guide/hoodie-size-chart">hoodie size chart</a> has the measurements.

How heavy fleece wears

A heavy fleece sits more structured on the body than a thin hoodie and it does not cling. Standard fit lands true to size. If the crew wears it over a shirt or a work top all day, size up one for room to move. The zip wears trimmer through the body; the pullover sits a little fuller.

Keeping heavy fleece from going flat

Heavy fleece lasts longest when the pile is not cooked. Wash cold and inside out, then tumble dry low or hang to dry. Heat is what mats the loft and pulls the softness out of a heavyweight hoodie, and it is harder on stitched thread and print than the wash itself.

Skip fabric softener on fleece. It coats the fibers, flattens the pile, and dulls a stitched logo over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What weight counts as a heavyweight hoodie?

Heavyweight is a marketing word, not a regulated standard, so the only reliable check is the fabric weight on the spec sheet. In the US that is ounces per square yard (oz/yd²); elsewhere it is grams per square meter (GSM). They convert directly, so 8.0 oz/yd² is 271 g/m². As a working guide, light hoodies sit under 8 oz, the heavy blend range runs roughly 8 to 9 oz, and 12 oz is about the top of what stays practical for a branded hoodie. If a listing says heavyweight but gives no number, treat it as a claim rather than a spec.

How heavy are the hoodies in this collection?

The Gildan heavy blend zips publish 8.0 oz/yd², which is 271 g/m², in a 50% cotton and 50% polyester fleece with air-jet yarn to reduce pilling. The Jerzees pullovers are an 80% cotton and 20% polyester fleece specified as heavyweight, with a double-lined hood and spandex-blended ribbed cuffs, but the mill publishes no ounce figure for them, so we do not put a number against it. The heaviest fleece Arklavo decorates is a 12 oz/yd² Champion Reverse Weave pullover, which sits in the wider custom hoodies range rather than this collection.

Is there a minimum order for custom heavyweight hoodies?

No. There is no minimum order on custom heavyweight hoodies. Order a single hoodie to feel the weight of the fleece and check the stitch in person, then run the rest for the crew once you are happy. There are no setup, digitizing or artwork fees at any quantity, and standard bulk discounts apply automatically as the order grows: 5% off at 10, 10% off at 24, 15% off at 50, 20% off at 100, and 25% off at 250 or more.

Does a heavier hoodie hold embroidery better?

Yes, and there is a mechanical reason. Thread needs something to bite into. On a thin fleece the needle perforates a loose knit and the design drifts as the fabric moves, so edges soften and small lettering closes up. A dense heavy fleece anchors every stitch and moves less under the needle, so the mark stays square instead of pulling oval after a few wash cycles. We digitize specifically for heavy fleece rather than reusing a T-shirt file, raise the stitch density so thread sits on top of the pile, and back the panel so the knit holds its shape.

How long do custom heavyweight hoodies take to arrive?

Production takes 2 days once you approve your free digital proof, and shipping then takes 2 to 5 business days. For cold-season kit, ordering by mid-October comfortably covers a crew before the first hard frost. We ship worldwide, and shipping is free on orders over $150 or the local-currency equivalent.

What sizes do the heavyweight hoodies come in?

It depends on the build, so check before planning a team run. The Gildan heavy blend zips cover XS to 5XL, which fits a mixed crew inside one order. The Jerzees pullovers run Small to 2XL in 9 colors. If part of your team needs above 2XL, put those people on the zip and keep the pullover for everyone else, or simply run the whole crew on the zip. We sort a full size run on a single order either way, and heavy fleece sits structured rather than clingy, so standard fit lands true to size.
