We embroider every cap in house, so I see how the crown, the brim, and the logo hold up over a season of real wear. These are the care steps we give our own customers to keep a branded hat looking new.
Your custom hats are built to last, and a little care keeps the crown sharp and the logo crisp for years. A cap is different from a shirt: the structure in the crown and brim is what you are protecting, so the main job is to spot-clean by hand and keep the cap out of the machine and the dryer. Here is how to clean, dry, and store your branded caps so they hold their shape and the logo stays sharp.
The short version
- ✓ Spot-clean by hand with cool water and mild soap.
- ✓ Keep structured caps out of the washing machine and dryer.
- ✓ Air dry on a round object so the crown keeps its shape.
- ✓ Store upright, never crushed flat under other items.
How should you clean a structured cap?
A structured cap, like a six-panel or trucker cap, has a stiffener called buckram in the front panels and a shaped brim. A washing machine and a dryer crush that structure and warp the brim, so a structured cap should be spot-cleaned by hand instead:
- Mix a little mild soap into cool water. Skip hot water, which can shrink the cap and stress the crown.
- Dip a soft cloth or soft brush and work gently on sweat marks and spots, a small area at a time.
- Work around the embroidery rather than scrubbing across it, so you do not snag the stitching.
- Wipe the soap away with a clean damp cloth. Do not soak the whole cap.
- Keep the brim out of it where you can, so the shaped bill stays firm.
Can you hand-wash an unstructured or dad hat?
An unstructured cap or dad hat has a soft, unstiffened crown and a more relaxed brim, so it handles a gentle hand-wash better than a structured cap. Even then, keep it out of the machine:
- Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Submerge the cap and swirl it gently by hand, working any soiled spots with your fingers.
- Rinse with clean cool water until no soap remains.
- Press the water out gently between your hands. Do not wring or twist the cap, which distorts the crown and brim.
- Reshape it by hand before drying so it dries in the right form.
How do you protect the embroidery?
A stitched logo is durable because it is sewn into the cap, not printed on top, which is why embroidery holds up so well to daily wear and outdoor use. It still pays to treat it gently:
- Do not iron directly on the embroidery. If a panel needs smoothing, steam it lightly from a distance rather than pressing the stitches.
- Spot-clean around the logo, not across it, so the thread is not dragged or flattened.
- Watch for snags. The thread is tough, but a caught loop is easier to prevent than to fix, especially on a cap that lives in a bag or a back pocket.
How should you dry a cap?
The dryer is the fastest way to ruin a cap, because the heat and tumbling shrink the fabric and warp the brim. Air dry instead, and dry it on something round so the crown holds its shape:
- Set the damp cap over a round object, a small jar, a balled-up towel, or a dedicated cap form, so the crown dries in shape.
- Let it air dry at room temperature. Keep it out of the dryer and away from radiators and other high heat.
- Keep it out of strong direct sunlight for long stretches, which can fade the cap color over time.
- Make sure it is fully dry, including the sweatband, before you wear or store it.
How should you store caps?
- Store caps upright on a shelf, a hook, or a cap rack, so the crown is not crushed.
- Do not stack heavy items on top of a cap, which flattens the crown and creases the brim.
- For a long break, stuff the crown lightly with tissue to help it hold its round shape.
- Keep them somewhere cool and dry, away from damp that can cause mustiness, and make sure each cap is fully dry before you put it away.
Quick do's and don'ts
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Spot-clean by hand, cool water, mild soap | Run a structured cap through the washing machine |
| Air dry on a round form | Tumble dry, which crushes the crown and brim |
| Press water out gently | Wring or twist the cap |
| Store upright on a shelf or rack | Iron the logo or crush the cap flat under other items |
Frequently asked questions
Q.Can I put a structured cap in the washing machine?
It is best not to. The machine and the dryer crush the stiffener in the front panels and warp the shaped brim, so a structured six-panel or trucker cap should be spot-cleaned by hand with cool water and mild soap, then air dried on a round form. Save the machine for soft, unstructured items only.
Q.How do I keep my cap from losing its shape?
Heat and crushing are what ruin a cap's shape, so keep it out of the dryer, never wring it, and air dry it over something round like a jar or a balled-up towel. Store it upright rather than stacked under heavy items, and stuff the crown lightly with tissue for a long break.
Q.Why does embroidery hold up better than a printed cap logo?
The thread is sewn into the cap rather than sitting on the curved surface of the crown, so it does not crack or peel with wear the way a print can. That is a big reason teams that wear caps outdoors often choose embroidery. Our screen print vs embroidery guide covers the trade-offs between the two.
