Team Sports Hit Historic Milestone as 90 Million Americans Join Leagues

For the first time in recorded history, more than 250 million Americans participated in at least one sport, fitness, or leisure activity in 2025, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association's 2026 Topline Participation Report. But one trend stands out sharply: team sports have surpassed 90 million total participants for the first time, marking the strongest growth category among all leisure and fitness activities.
The milestone reflects a fundamental shift in how Americans organize their recreation. Youth soccer leagues are expanding rosters. Adult recreational leagues from softball to volleyball are opening wait lists. Corporate team-building programs are booking faster than ever. School athletic departments are adding sports and expanding teams.
For business owners, youth program directors, and team operators, this surge creates an immediate need: uniforms, custom team gear, and branded apparel that makes a group feel like a group, the gap Arklavo's custom sports team apparel collection is built to fill.
"The participation boom is real, but the supply infrastructure hasn't caught up," says Conor Smart, Managing Director of Arklavo, a custom apparel company serving more than 13,000 businesses worldwide. "We're seeing orders pour in from sports leagues, schools, and corporate teams that suddenly have 20% more players than they budgeted for, and they need custom jerseys, warm-up gear, and team wear in days, not weeks."
The SFIA data shows that among seven activity categories tracked (individual sports, team sports, fitness activities, water sports, racquet sports, winter sports, and extreme sports), team sports delivered the highest growth rate year-over-year. This suggests that Americans aren't just staying active; they're choosing activities that require group coordination, shared identity, and team cohesion.
For small-business owners who manage teams, the economics matter. A restaurant owner sponsoring a company softball team needs polos with a logo. A school's physical education department adding a new club sport needs uniforms for 30 players. A youth baseball organization scaling up needs quality team apparel without the bulk-order minimums that made custom gear out of reach a decade ago.
Traditional uniform suppliers have long required 50-unit or 100-unit minimums, making it financially risky for smaller teams to order custom gear. But the landscape is shifting. Modern custom apparel companies now offer no-minimum ordering, AI-powered design tools, and streamlined production. A team operator can order five personalized hoodies for staff, 25 custom jerseys for this season's roster, and a batch of embroidered caps for sponsors, all from one vendor with no bulk penalty, drawn from Arklavo's Arklavo custom apparel brands lineup.
The timing aligns with another trend the SFIA report flags: facility demand is climbing. More people are joining teams, which means more games, practices, and events. More events mean more opportunities for team identity to matter, and custom apparel is where that identity lives. That connection carries through in team sports hit historic milestone as 90 million americans join leagues.
"The 90-million milestone tells us that group participation is becoming the default," Smart adds. "Team sports aren't a niche anymore. They're how millions of Americans choose to stay active. Every team needs to look the part, and that means custom gear is no longer a luxury, it's a necessity."
For apparel companies, the implication is straightforward: the next wave of growth isn't coming from big-box retailers or bulk corporate accounts. It's coming from the democratization of custom gear, making it affordable and fast for any team to wear colors that say who they are. That shift is already underway, and the SFIA data confirms it's just getting started.
